2017 Year-End Tax Deadlines

If you're an independent contractor or someone who works for yourself, you're probably going to be receiving a 1099 form pretty soon, and that means some tax deadlines are coming up. Don't worry, we've rounded up all the important dates you need to know about.

(Don't forget, the FREE Stride Tax App can help you save thousands of dollars on your tax bill and hours of tax prep time by automatically tracking your miles and expenses, surfacing money-saving deductions, and getting your forms IRS-ready. Get it today!)

Jan 29, 2018 - IRS begins accepting tax returns

You won't be able to file earlier than this date!

Jan 31, 2018 - 1099 Forms delivered

You should receive your 1099 forms reporting your 2017 earnings from companies you worked with by or before this date.

Relevant Forms: 1099-MISC, 1099-K, 1099-G, etc.

April 17, 2018 - 2017 tax returns due OR extensions due

You should either postmark your return by this date or e-file prior to this deadline. If you do mail in your return, a tax filing is considered filed on time as long as you postmark it by this date!

If you need an extension, make sure to file for one before this date with Form 4868. An extension will grant you 6 more months to file your return (but not an extension to pay the tax that you owe!).

Relevant Forms: 1040, Schedule SE, Schedule C, or any other forms required for your income returns

Tip: Expecting a refund or reimbursement for overpaying on your taxes? Make sure to file a refund or reimbursement claim within three years from the time you file your return OR within two years from the time the tax is paid, whichever expires later.

Oct. 15, 2018 - Final deadline for those who filed for an Form 4868 extension

Americans living in other countries have until June 15th to file their income taxes.

Relevant Forms: 1040, Schedule SE, Schedule C, or any other forms required for your income returns
