Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with Strider Dani Londoño
While celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, we spoke with Stride’s Partner Success Manager, Dani Londoño about her Latin heritage and discussed how her mom and dad are her biggest role models and influences growing up.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you ended up at Stride?
I gained experience working in the benefits administration field, particularly with healthcare plans, COBRA, and pre-tax benefits like ICHRAs, FSAs, HSAs. Given the challenges presented by COVID-19, I became increasingly aware of the significant number of individuals in need of insurance and an overall lack of understanding of their benefits. It was during this time that I realized my desire to do more with my healthcare background and to make a positive impact by helping people who are typically underserved when it comes to healthcare. This led me on a quest to find a company that aligned with my values and allowed me to contribute my expertise. I was excited when I discovered Stride – whose mission perfectly resonated with my beliefs. Here, I have the opportunity to not only apply my knowledge but also make a meaningful difference in people's lives.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time at the gorgeous beaches here in Miami. A usual weekend for my partner and I includes packing up some sandwiches, drinks and spending the full day at the beach with a good book. It really helps that my fellow Striders have the best book recommendations! Cooking is another passion of mine, exploring new recipes and cuisines from all around the world. I’m currently hyper focused on making the perfect pizza dough for Friday nights. Speaking of food, living in Miami offers endless opportunities to try diverse cuisines, and I always enjoy discovering local gems.
What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you?
Hispanic Heritage Month means a lot to me because it's a time to proudly celebrate the incredible culture, traditions, and achievements of the Hispanic community. As a Latina, this month allows me to embrace my roots and honor the rich diversity that makes our heritage so vibrant. It's a time to share and appreciate the delicious flavors of our cuisine, from savoring homemade arepas to indulging in a plate of mouth watering Colombian empanadas. Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to reflect on the warmth, resilience, and interconnectedness that defines our community and makes me proud of my Hispanic identity. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of passing down traditions and instilling pride in future generations, ensuring our heritage continues to thrive and be celebrated.
Who (or what) were your biggest role models and influences growing up?
My biggest role models growing up and even now are undoubtedly my mom and dad. They emigrated from Colombia to the US when I was just five years old, and witnessing their journey has been nothing short of inspiring.
My parents faced numerous challenges as they had to start from scratch, going back to school, and acquiring new skills in a foreign country. It wasn't always easy to witness them take on multiple jobs, often involving strenuous labor, and even sacrificing their weekends. However, despite the hardships they faced, my parents always made sure that I had everything I needed and experienced the best in life, I never felt different from my peers. Their sacrifices and relentless work ethic have molded me into the person I am today.
What makes their story even more extraordinary is the fact that they recently opened their first small business this year. I couldn't be more proud of them. To witness all of their hard work finally paying off is truly awe-inspiring. It's a testament to their tenacity and serves as a constant reminder that with hard work and determination, anything is possible.
My parents have not only taught me the importance of hard work but also the value of resilience, perseverance, and never giving up on your dreams. They continue to be my guiding light and serve as a constant reminder that success is achievable through dedication and a positive mindset.
In what ways has your culture and heritage shaped your identity?
My culture and heritage have played a significant role in shaping my identity. As someone with Colombian roots, I am proud to embrace and celebrate the rich traditions and values that come along with it.
Growing up in a household deeply rooted in Colombian culture, I was immersed in the vibrant music, delicious food, and strong sense of family and community. My mom would often wake us up early on Saturday mornings blasting Salsa music as she cleaned the house and made breakfast. Turns out the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree although I’m usually blasting Bad Bunny or Peso Pluma throughout the house while I cook the Colombian recipes she taught me.
The warmth and inclusiveness that are integral parts of Colombian culture have shaped my personality. I strive to extend kindness and acceptance to everyone I meet, just as I have witnessed my own family do. My family has a contagious warmth that I aspire to embody everyday, they are always the first people to offer to help and they’re always the first people to try to feed you some sort of Colombian delicacy.
My cultural background has also nurtured a sense of resilience and adaptability. I have learned to embrace change, as my family's journey to the United States required us to adapt to a new language and culture. All of these experiences and all of the people I have met have taught me to be open-minded, adaptable, and willing to embrace diversity in all its forms.
My culture and heritage have guided me in many meaningful ways. I continue to carry these influences with pride, finding strength and inspiration in my identity every step of the way.
What makes you most proud to be a member of the Hispanic community?
There are several aspects that make me incredibly proud of the community. I have to start off with the rich and diverse cultural heritage that spans across various countries and regions. I now live in Miami and have been exposed to other Hispanic cultures more than ever before. I am constantly learning about other Latin countries. The vibrant music, colorful art, and flavorful cuisine are just some of the elements that showcase the immense creativity and rich history within our community.
I also take immense pride in the strong sense of family and community that is deeply ingrained in Hispanic culture. The importance placed on maintaining close-knit relationships, supporting one another, and celebrating milestones together (we also love any excuse to throw a good party).
Furthermore, the resilience and strength exhibited by many Hispanics in the face of challenging circumstances is a source of inspiration for me. Whether it be my own family’s experience, our friends, or stories we see on the news I truly believe that Latinos keep the American Dream alive with their determination and hard work. Seeing individuals thrive and succeed despite adversities is a testament to the indomitable spirit within our community.
Lastly, the contributions of Hispanics to various fields, including art, literature, sciences, and business, are remarkable and have had a profound impact on society. Knowing that I am a part of this rich tapestry of achievements fills me with an immense sense of pride and motivates me to continue making a positive difference as a member of the Hispanic community.
