How To Find Your Own Health Insurance After You Turn 26

You may have heard that you can only stay on your parents’ health insurance plan until you turn 26. So what exactly happens when it’s time to find a plan of your own? Here’s everything you need to know to navigate this milestone stress-free.

Your birthday is a qualifying event. Turning 26 is what’s considered a qualifying life event, which means it makes you eligible for a Special Enrollment Period, an opportunity to sign up for a new health plan outside of the annual Open Enrollment Period when anyone can search for new coverage. You have 60 days before or after your big day to sign up for a new health plan.

There is a bit of paperwork. You’ll need documented proof that your coverage on your parents’ plan is ending, like a termination letter from their health plan. You’ll also need a legal form of identification, like a driver's license or passport.

Consider the power of an HSA.  If you’re generally healthy, pair a high deductible plan with a health savings account (HSA). High deductible plans have lower monthly payments, but you pay more before insurance kicks in. But HSAs allow you to save money tax-free to use on future medical expenses.

Look for ways to save. Depending on your income, the government may pay for some of your health insurance. A subsidy can make plans significantly more affordable: In fact, four out of five people can find a plan for less than $10 per month due to these government subsidies. Don’t forget to check as you’re going through the enrollment process!
