Late January, 2020 - IRS begins accepting tax returns

In general, the IRS starts accepting tax return filings towards the end of January. At this point, the IRS hasn’t yet announced this exact date. Don’t stress–we will update this as soon as we have the information. Keep in mind: you won't be able to file earlier than this date!

January 31, 2020 - 1099 Forms delivered

You should receive your 1099 forms (and W-2 forms if you also receive income from an employer!) reporting your 2019 earnings from companies you worked with by or before this date. 1099 and W-2 forms simply have to be postmarked by January 31, so you might receive them a few days into February.

Relevant Forms: 1099-MISC, 1099-K, 1099-G, etc.

April 15, 2020 - 2019 tax returns due OR extensions due

You should either postmark your return by this date or e-file prior to this deadline. If you do mail in your return, a tax filing is considered filed on time as long as you postmark it by this date!

If you don’t feel like you are going to be ready to file by Tax Day 2020 and need an extension, make sure to file for one before this date with Form 4868. An extension will grant you six more months (AKA until October 15) to file your return. Keep in mind an extension will NOT give you an extension to pay the tax that you owe; you’ll still need to send in a tax payment to the IRS, even if you’ve filed for an extension.

Relevant Forms: 1040, Schedule SE, Schedule C, or any other forms required for your income returns

Special circumstance: June 15, 2020 - Deadline for U.S. citizens abroad

If you are an American living in another country, you have until June 15th to file your income taxes.

October 15, 2020 - Final deadline for those who filed for a Form 4868 extension

Received an extension? You need to file prior to this deadline!
